Application Overview for Current and Incoming Penn Students

If you are a current or incoming Penn graduate student interested in enrolling for the upcoming year, complete the SCAN certificate application. Please note that the Graduate Certificate in Social, Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience (SCAN) traditionally admits for the fall term each year. Our program team reviews submitted applications and e-mails you directly with the decision or need for follow-up.

The SCAN certificate application for Penn students includes:

  • Contact information
  • Degree program information
  • Advisor contact information
  • Statement of purpose (details below)*
  • Your proposed SCAN course schedule

*You are asked to complete a short statement explaining the relevance of neuroscience to your academic and career plans.

After you are accepted into the program, be sure to register for the relevant courses as soon as possible. Note that Foundations of Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience (PSYC 5470) is offered only in the fall and is a prerequisite for virtually all other SCAN courses. We encourage you to contact us by e-mail and schedule a time to speak with Program Director Martha Farah and Center Associate Director Natalie Larkin-Gilmore if you have any questions.

Applications are received and reviewed on a rolling basis through the end of the fall course registration period. To ensure that you can pre-register for courses, our team requests that your application portfolio is submitted by the following date:
