Dr. Leshner served as CEO of AAAS, the world’s largest, multi-disciplinary scientific and engineering society, and Executive Publisher of its journal Science from 2001 until 2015. Before his role at AAAS, Dr. Leshner held many prestigious positions, including Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Director and Acting Director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and several senior roles at the National Science Foundation (NSF) focusing on basic research in the biological, behavioral and social sciences, science policy, and science education. Prior to his work at the NSF, Dr. Leshner was a Professor of Psychology at Bucknell University. He has been elected a fellow of many professional societies, and has received numerous awards from both professional and lay groups for his national leadership in science, mental illness and mental health, and substance abuse and addiction.
